Radiator
The radiator of today’s vehicle is highly overlooked. The purpose of the radiator is to hold a capacity of engine coolant and to keep your engine running at a proper operating temperature. As coolant is running through your engine and being heated by the enormous amount of heat a engine creates, it is sent through passages and hoses to the radiator where it is pushed through very small passages that are surrounded by fine metal fins. The fins are meant to help use every amount of air flow possible to cool off the coolant as it passes by. Once through the passages of the radiator it is then sent back through another hose to the engine and continue it cycle once again.
Here are a couple of statements that are often heard and caused by our customers with a faulty radiator-
- “I see some green/red stuff coming from the engine compartment, But it’s coming from both sides of the vehicle.”
· This is most likely a leak coming from either a radiator core, tank or hose. While driving, the radiator is under constant internal pressure to allow flow. Some people might complain of this problem happening right after they shut their vehicle off but slows overnight. Most radiators rest above what is called a core support which will actually catch a leaky radiator and allow coolant to run off both sides.
- “My engine temperature runs hot when I sit in traffic, once I get moving the temperature comes right down.”
- This can be caused by a faulty radiator fan but could also be caused by something as simple as the radiator being plugged up with bugs, grass and dirt. This causes poor air flow through radiator.
